Product Details
Sculptural Elegance: Haworthia
A living gemstone for the discerning collector, prized for its architectural symmetry and crystal-clear leaf windows.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus is named in honor of the British botanist Adrian Hardy Haworth (1767–1833), a pioneer in succulent classification who contributed significantly to the Linnean Society.
The name was established by Henri Auguste Duval in 1809 to distinguish these small, rosette-forming plants from the larger Aloe genus they were previously grouped with. - Morphology: These succulents are characterized by thick, fleshy leaves arranged in a rosette.
Many species feature fenestrations (transparent epidermal "windows") on the leaf tips that allow light to reach internal photosynthetic tissues. The leaf surfaces often display tubercles (wart-like bumps) or intricate white bands of raised tissue, providing a tactile, structural aesthetic. - Habitat & Origin: While many collector favorites are Japanese or domestic cultivars bred for specific patterns, the species originates in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa.
Our specimens are nursery-propagated via tissue culture or offsets to ensure the protection of wild populations from poaching. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite and 30% organic matter). Avoid standard garden soil which retains too much heat and moisture in Indian humidity.
- Light: Bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from harsh afternoon sun (12 PM – 4 PM) to prevent "sunburn" or purple stress coloration; a north or east-facing balcony is ideal.
- Water/Dormancy: Drench and dry method. Water thoroughly when the mix is bone-dry. During the peak summer dormancy (May–June) and cold winters, reduce watering significantly to prevent root rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Haworthias are often called "underground succulents" in the wild. Many species grow almost entirely buried in the soil with only their transparent leaf tips exposed. This biological strategy protects them from the scorching African sun while still allowing them to "eat" sunlight through their internal windows.
