Haworthia hybrid Loulan
Product Details
The Timeless Allure of Haworthia 'Loulan'
A high-contrast masterpiece for the discerning collector, blending architectural symmetry with a windowed transparency reminiscent of ancient glass.
- Origin & History of Name: The cultivar name "Loulan" refers to the legendary "Kingdom of Loulan," an ancient oasis city along the Silk Road in the Tarim Basin. Botanists chose this name to evoke the desert mystery of the lost city, mirroring the plant’s rugged yet refined aesthetic that seems unearthed from a bygone era.
- Morphology: This hybrid is distinguished by its compact, rosetted growth and thick, triangular leaves. It features a dark, reticulated epidermis with raised, white tubercles (wart-like bumps) that provide a rough texture. Most notable are its "windows"—translucent fenestrations at the leaf tips that allow light to penetrate deep into the plant body for photosynthesis.
- Habitat & Origin: Haworthia 'Loulan' is a cultivated hybrid, specifically bred for the domestic market to enhance the "window" clarity and leaf texture found in wild Haworthia emelyae var. comptoniana or H. picta lineages. As a nursery-produced cultivar, it is a sustainable choice that does not impact wild South African populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% inorganic). In the Indian climate, a blend of pumice, perlite, and fine crushed brick with a small amount of coco-peat is ideal to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered light. In India, provide 40–50% shade cloth during the harsh afternoon sun to avoid leaf scorch, though mild winter sun enhances its dark pigmentation.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the substrate is bone-dry. In the Indian subcontinent, these plants often enter semi-dormancy during the peak heat of May–June; reduce water significantly during these months and during the peak of the monsoon to avoid fungal issues.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Haworthia was named after the British botanist Adrian Hardy Haworth in the early 19th century. Interestingly, while these plants look like miniature Aloes, genetic testing has shown they are more closely related to the Gasteria genus, leading to the creation of many fascinating intergeneric hybrids in modern succulent "haute couture."
