Product Details
The Rugged Relic: Haworthia koelmaniorum
A slow-growing masterpiece of living sculpture, prized by connoisseurs for its rare, dark-textured foliage.
- Origin & History of Name: The species name koelmaniorum honors the Koelman family, particularly Arthur Koelman, who was a prominent South African succulent enthusiast and collector.
It was formally described in 1967 by the botanist G.G. Smith. The Latin suffix "-orum" denotes that it was named after multiple members of the family who contributed to the discovery and preservation of the species. - Morphology: This succulent is characterized by its dark, brownish-green epidermis which features a rough, scabrous texture. The leaves are deltoid and recurved, often displaying distinct longitudinal costae (ribs) and small raised tubercles that give it a "reptilian" appearance. Unlike many other Haworthia, it lacks transparent "windows," instead utilizing its opaque, thickened leaf structure to endure intense light.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to a very restricted range in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. It typically grows in rocky crevices and among sandstone outcrops. Due to its limited distribution in nature, nursery-grown specimens are the only sustainable way to acquire this plant without contributing to the poaching of wild populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix. In the Indian climate, a ratio of 70% inorganic material (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) to 30% organic matter (well-aged compost) prevents root rot during monsoon humidity.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, avoid direct afternoon sun which can scorch the epidermis; a north or east-facing balcony is ideal.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the substrate is completely dry. In most parts of India, this plant may go semi-dormant during the peak summer heat (May–June); reduce watering significantly during this period and during the winter.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Haworthia koelmaniorum is considered one of the slowest-growing species within the genus. In the wild, it is often found growing in close association with specific types of grass; this "nurse plant" relationship provides the young succulents with essential shade and a slightly more humid microclimate, allowing them to survive the harsh South African sun before they are large enough to withstand the elements alone.
