A coveted masterpiece for the serious collector, prized for its translucent windowed leaves and deep, near-black pigmentation.

1. Origin & History of Name: The name is derived from the Latin magnifica (magnificent) and atrofusca, a compound of ater (black) and fuscus (dark/dusky). It was formally described in 1948 by South African botanist G.G. Smith. The name specifically honors the plant's unusually dark coloration compared to other Haworthia species, which served as a primary distinguishing factor during its classification.
2. Morphology: This succulent forms a compact rosette of thick, acuminated leaves. Its most striking feature is the epidermis, which is covered in minute, blunt papillae giving it a matte texture. The leaf tips feature "fenestrate" (windowed) areas that allow light to reach internal photosynthetic tissues. Under high light, the plant exhibits deep reddish-brown to charcoal anthocyanin stress coloration.
3. Habitat & Origin: This is a wild variety native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, specifically the region around Riversdale. Our specimens are seed-grown or tissue-cultured to ensure sustainability and protect wild populations from poaching, which is a significant threat to South African succulents.
4. Cultivation Profile:
   • Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% inorganic). A blend of pumice, perlite, and fine lava rock with 30% organic compost works best in Indian humidity.
   • Light: Bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 40-60% green shade cloth protection during summer to prevent scorching while maintaining dark pigmentation.
   • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the medium is completely dry. This variety enters semi-dormancy during the peak of the Indian summer; reduce watering frequency significantly during May and June to prevent root rot.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Haworthia leaf windows are a biological marvel of "optical fibers." The translucent windows on the leaf tips act like skylights, filtering intense sun and channeling it deep into the body of the plant.
