Origin & History of Name The specific epithet pumila is Latin for "dwarf," a name originally assigned by Carl Linnaeus when he classified the plant as Aloe pumila (believing it to be a miniature Aloe). The genus name honors Adrian Hardy Haworth, a British entomologist and botanist. The cultivar name "Donuts" is a modern horticultural designation referring to the phenotype's unique tubercles, which form perfect, raised annuli (rings) rather than solid dots, resembling tiny donuts.
2. Morphology This plant features a robust rosette of hard, lanceolate leaves with a dark green epidermis. It is defined by its cartilaginous white tubercles, which are morphologically distinct in this cultivar; instead of simple papillae, they manifest as raised white circles or "donuts." The variegated form adds a layer of complexity with longitudinal striations of cream or yellow lacking chlorophyll, creating a high-contrast chimera against the deep green leaf tissue.
