1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name honors British botanist Adrian Hardy Haworth (1767–1833), who contributed significantly to succulent classification. The specific epithet retusa is derived from the Latin retusus, meaning "rounded" or "blunted," referring to the distinct shape of the leaf tips that appear as if they have been pushed back or truncated.
2. Morphology: This plant is characterized by a compact rosette of thick, deltoid leaves. The epidermis (outer skin) features "leaf windows"—translucent tissue that allows light to penetrate deep into the leaf for photosynthesis. The variegation is chimeral, appearing as stable longitudinal stripes of cream or yellow against a deep lime-green base. Unlike many succulents, its surface is smooth and lacks costae (ribs) or prominent tubercles, focusing visual interest on its geometric form.
3. Habitat & Origin: The base species Haworthia retusa is native to the Riversdale region of the Western Cape, South Africa. However, this variegated form is a cultivar, primarily refined through selective breeding in nurseries. Our specimens are propagated via offset division or tissue culture to ensure the sustainability of wild populations and the stability of the variegation pattern.
4. Cultivation Profile:
   • Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (60% inorganic material like pumice, perlite, or crushed leca; 40% organic matter). Avoid standard garden soil which retains excessive moisture in humid Indian climates.
   • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. In India, a north or east-facing windowsill is ideal. Protect from harsh midday sun (12:00 PM – 4:00 PM), which can scorch the variegated tissue.
   • Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" cycle. In the Indian subcontinent, these plants often enter a semi-dormancy during the peak heat of summer and the peak cold of winter; reduce watering during these periods to prevent root rot.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Haworthias were once classified under the genus Aloe due to their similar flowering structures. It wasn’t until the early 19th century that they were separated based on their unique, two-lipped (bilabiate) flowers. This specific species, H. retusa, was among the first Haworthias to be described by Linnaeus himself in 1753, though he originally labeled it Aloe retusa.
