Product Details
Radiant Ribbons: Hildewintera 'Bum 976'
A high-performance hybrid coveted by collectors for its dramatic pendulous growth and exceptional floral frequency.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Hildewintera was named in honor of Hildegard Winter, sister of the renowned cacti explorer Friedrich Ritter.
The cultivar designation "Bum 976" originates from the systematic breeding records of Hans-Georg "Bum" Mainda, a prolific German hybridizer who utilized a numbered cataloging system to track specific genetic crosses within the Hildewintera (now often classified under Cleistocactus) lineage. - Morphology: This cactus features elongated, cylindrical stems (epidermis) that transition from an upright habit to a trailing form as they mature. The stems are densely covered in fine, bristly spines that arise from closely set areoles. It is distinguished by its "costae" (ribs) which are less prominent than in other species, allowing for a more fluid, rope-like appearance. The plant is prized for its zygomorphic flowers—blooms that are bilaterally symmetrical—typically displaying vibrant, multi-toned Pink and Dark Pink petals.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a specialized horticultural cultivar rather than a wild species. It was developed through selective breeding in Europe to enhance floral color and stem resilience. As a nursery-produced hybrid, it supports sustainability by reducing the demand for field-collected specimens from South American rocky outcrops.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix consisting of 70% grit (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) and 30% organic matter. In the Indian climate, ensure the pot is porous (terracotta is ideal) to prevent root rot during humid months.
- Light: High-intensity filtered sunlight. In India, provide morning sun but shield from the scorching 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM "loo" winds and direct summer overhead sun to prevent epidermis scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly when the substrate is completely dry. During the Indian monsoon, keep the plant under cover to avoid over-saturation. Reduce watering significantly from November to February during the cool-season dormancy.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Members of this genus are often called "Monkey Tail" cacti.
Interestingly, while most cacti are pollinated by bees or bats, the unique tubular shape and bright colors of Hildewintera flowers evolved specifically to attract hummingbirds, whose long beaks are perfectly adapted to reach the nectar at the base of the bloom.
