Hildewintera Hybrid Humkes Klein Gelbe
Product Details
Golden Cascade: Hildewintera hybrid 'Humkes Klein Gelbe'
An exquisite pendulous hybrid renowned for its prolific display of vibrant, lemon-yellow multi-petaled blooms.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus was named in honor of Hildegard Winter (1893–1975), sister of the famous botanist Friedrich Ritter. The cultivar name 'Humkes Klein Gelbe' is German, where "Klein" means small and "Gelbe" means yellow, identifying it as a specific selection by the German hybridizer Humke. While modern taxonomy often merges this genus into Cleistocactus, the name Hildewintera remains the horticultural standard for these trailing showpieces.
- Morphology: This cactus features elongated, pendulous stems covered in a dense coating of soft, golden-yellow bristly spines arising from closely set areoles. Unlike upright species, its epidermis is designed for a lithophytic or epiphytic habit. The flowers are actinomorphic (radially symmetrical) and multi-layered, appearing laterally along the stems in a striking shade of sulfur yellow.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a specialized cultivar resulting from selective breeding within the Hildewintera (now Cleistocactus) group, originally native to the rocky cliffs of Bolivia. It is produced exclusively through sustainable nursery cultivation and vegetative propagation, ensuring no impact on sensitive wild cliffside ecosystems.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Best suited for a highly aerated mineral-based mix (50% crushed brick or pumice, 20% coarse sand, and 30% organic compost). Perfect for hanging planters to accommodate its trailing habit.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from harsh midday sun to prevent the golden spines from bleaching; a bright balcony with morning sun is ideal.
- Water/Dormancy: Maintain moderate moisture during the hot growing season but ensure the pot never sits in water during the Indian monsoon. Reduce watering significantly from November to February to respect its cool-dry dormancy period.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The type species for this genus, Hildewintera colademononis (the Monkey’s Tail Cactus), was only scientifically described in 2003, making this entire group a relatively "modern" obsession in the succulent world. Hybridizers like Humke utilized these newly discovered genetics to break away from the standard orange/red floral palette, resulting in rare yellow-flowering gems like 'Klein Gelbe'.
