Hildewintera hybrid Mocca
Product Details
Velvety Hues: Hildewintera hybrid 'Mocca'
A rare collector’s cactus prized for its unusual chocolate-toned spines and cascading growth habit.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Hildewintera honors the German nurserywoman Hildegard Winter, sister of the famous botanist Friedrich Ritter.
The cultivar name 'Mocca' was selected to reflect the distinct coffee-colored, brownish-red hue of the dense spination that covers the stems, distinguishing it from the typical golden or white-spined varieties. - Morphology: This succulent features cylindrical stems with a soft, velvet-like appearance due to a high density of fine bristly spines. The epidermis (outer skin) is a deep green, but it is largely obscured by the brownish areoles. Unlike many cacti with sharp ribs, this hybrid has numerous low costae (ribs), allowing for a flexible, pendulous growth form that makes it ideal for hanging baskets.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a cultivated hybrid (cultivar) and does not exist in the wild. It is derived from the Hildewintera genus (often reclassified under Cleistocactus), which is native to the rocky cliffs of Bolivia. This specific selection was bred in a controlled greenhouse environment to emphasize spine color and vigorous trailing growth; it is produced sustainably through vegetative propagation.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix. In India, a blend of 50% coarse river sand or crushed gravel, 20% perlite, and 30% organic compost works best to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 4–6 hours of morning sun, but use 50% shade cloth during the extreme heat of May and June to avoid scorching the epidermis.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is bone-dry. During the monsoon, keep the plant sheltered from rain. In the mild Indian winter, reduce watering significantly to trigger a brief dormancy period.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Hildewintera has been the subject of significant botanical debate, often being merged into Cleistocactus and then moved to Borzicactus. Interestingly, these plants are "ornithophilous," meaning their flowers evolved specifically to be pollinated by hummingbirds, resulting in vibrant, unscented blooms that typically open during the day.
