Lobivia acchaensis
Product Details
Vivid Radiance: Lobivia acchaensis
A high-altitude botanical gem prized for its striking magenta-to-white gradient blooms and symmetrical geometric form.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Lobivia is an anagram of Bolivia, the country where many species were first identified.
The specific epithet acchaensis refers to its type locality near Accha in the Cusco region. Historically, the genus was established by Nathaniel Britton and Joseph Rose in 1922 to distinguish these globular, diurnal-blooming cacti from the more upright Echinopsis. - Morphology: This species features a globose to short-cylindrical epidermis characterized by distinct, tuberculate costae (ribs). It is armed with radial spines that provide a structural contrast to its soft floral display. The flower is highly symmetrical, featuring multiple layers of lance-shaped petals. These exhibit a vibrant magenta-pink anthocyanin pigmentation at the tips, transitioning to a white receptacle base, surrounding a pale green and yellow reproductive center.
- Habitat & Origin: Lobivia acchaensis is a wild species endemic to the high-elevation Andean slopes of Peru. It thrives in rocky, well-draining alpine environments. Our specimens are ethically sourced through sustainable horticultural propagation, ensuring the preservation of wild populations in their high-altitude Peruvian habitats.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a highly porous, mineral-based mix (e.g., 80% volcanic rock, crushed brick, or coarse sand and 20% organic compost) to mimic Andean scree.
- Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, it benefits from intense morning sun; however, provide 30-50% shade cloth protection during peak summer afternoons in the plains to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a strict seasonal schedule. Water thoroughly during the growing season (March–September), allowing the substrate to dry completely.
Maintain absolute dryness during the winter dormancy (October–February) to trigger the subsequent year's flowering cycle.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Lobivia species are noted for their extreme cold hardiness compared to other tropical cacti, a result of their evolution at altitudes exceeding 3,000 meters. Interestingly, the taxonomic status of Lobivia has been a subject of long-standing debate; while many botanists recently merged them into the genus Echinopsis, dedicated collectors maintain the name Lobivia to highlight their unique, high-mountain floral characteristics.
