Lobivia hybrid KA90
Product Details
Solar Flare Radiance: Lobivia hybrid KA90
A precision-bred specimen featuring architectural ribbing and rare, dual-tone sunset blooms for the discerning collector.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Lobivia is a taxonomic anagram of Bolivia, the primary country of its origin. The "KA90" designation refers to a specific breeder's alphanumeric line—often indicating a cross between high-performance parents—where "KA" typically identifies the hybridizer's initials and "90" denotes the specific cross or selection number in the series.
- Morphology: This hybrid exhibits a globose to cylindrical dark-green epidermis organized into distinct costae (ribs) armed with symmetrical areoles. Its most striking feature is the multi-layered floral structure; the perianth segments (petals) transition from deep orange to vibrant yellow, surrounding a dense, trichome-rich (fuzzy) floral throat designed to maximize pollinator attraction.
- Habitat & Origin: Lobivia hybrid KA90 is a cultivated variety (cultivar), not found in the wild. It is the result of selective breeding designed to enhance floral size and pigment stability. Our specimens are produced via sustainable nursery practices, ensuring no wild populations are impacted by commercial trade.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice, 30% organic matter). In the humid Indian climate, high porosity is essential to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight to maintain compact growth and trigger bloom cycles. During peak May/June Indian summers, 30% green shade net is recommended to prevent epidermis scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly during the growing season (March–September) only when the medium is bone-dry. Maintain a strict dry dormancy in winter to facilitate flower bud initiation for the following spring.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Historically, Lobivia was considered a distinct genus until many taxonomists folded it into Echinopsis. However, collectors still maintain the name because of the "Lobivia-style" flower—which, unlike the long-tubed, white, nocturnal Echinopsis flowers, are typically short-tubed, diurnal (day-blooming), and display a far more vivid color palette.
