Lobivia hybrid SA69
Product Details
Radiant Sunset: Lobivia hybrid SA69
A rare bicolored masterpiece, this hybrid is a prized collector’s gem for its striking contrast and symmetrical form.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Lobivia is an anagram of Bolivia, the country where many of these species were first discovered.
The name was established by botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose in 1922. The specific designation "SA69" is a clonal identifier used by breeders to track this particular hybrid's lineage and ensure the stability of its unique bicolored floral traits. - Morphology: This cactus features a globose (rounded) epidermis that may become slightly columnar with age. Its most distinct feature is the multi-layered perianth (flower), where the slender, lanceolate petals exhibit a high degree of pigmentation contrast. The ribs (costae) are well-defined and host woolly areoles from which small radial spines emerge, providing a rugged aesthetic that contrasts with the delicate, satiny texture of the bloom.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a nursery-produced cultivar, not found in the wild. It was developed through selective cross-breeding of South American Lobivia species to isolate specific flower colors. Cultivar production is a sustainable practice that protects wild populations from poaching by providing enthusiasts with ethically lab-grown or greenhouse-propagated specimens.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix consisting of 70% inorganic material (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) and 30% organic matter to prevent root rot in humid Indian climates.
- Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours to encourage blooming; however, provide 30% shade cloth during the peak of the Indian summer (April–June) to avoid epidermis scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" method during the growing season. Observe a strict dry dormancy from November to February to mimic its high-altitude ancestry, which is essential for triggering the next season's flower buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Lobivia species are famous in the botanical world for their "explosive" blooming strategy. While the flowers are among the most vibrant in the Cactaceae family, they often remain open for less than 24 hours. This high-energy, short-duration display is an evolutionary adaptation to attract specific high-altitude pollinators quickly before the harsh Andean sun or winds damage the delicate petals.
