Radiant High-Altitude Specialist: Lobivia saltensis var. zapallarensis

This rare Argentine gem features stunning burnt-orange blooms that contrast sharply against its compact, geometric spine structure.

1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Lobivia is a geographic anagram of Bolivia, the country where many species were first identified. The specific epithet saltensis refers to the Argentine province of Salta. This variety, zapallarensis, is named after the Quebrada de Zapallar, the specific mountain pass in Argentina where the population was documented, distinguishing it from the type species by its unique floral pigmentation.
2. Morphology: This globose cactus features a dark green epidermis organized into 13–18 low costae (ribs). It is characterized by short, radial spines that sit flush against the body. Its primary aesthetic draw is the actinomorphic flower: layered, lanceolate petals in burnt-orange hues radiate from a dark, nectar-rich center. The anthers are heavily laden with white pollen, creating a speckled contrast against the deep floral throat.
3. Habitat & Origin: This is a wild variety endemic to the high-elevation grasslands and rocky outcrops of the Salta region in northwest Argentina. It grows at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 meters. Our specimens are nursery-grown from seed, ensuring the preservation of wild populations and adhering to sustainable horticultural practices.
4. Cultivation Profile:
   • Substrate: Requires an acidic, highly porous mineral mix. Use a blend of 80% grit (lava rock, coarse sand, or burnt clay) and 20% peat-free organic matter. Avoid alkaline components like limestone.
   • Light: Thrives in high-intensity filtered light. In the Indian subcontinent, it requires protection from the scorching midday sun of the plains but benefits from the UV-rich morning light found in terrace or balcony gardens.
   • Water/Dormancy: Provide regular watering from March to September, allowing the medium to dry completely. During the Indian winter, it requires a cool, dry dormancy to trigger spring flowering; withhold water entirely when temperatures drop below 15°C.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Lobivia was famously established by botanist Britton & Rose in 1922. For decades, it was a subject of intense taxonomic debate, eventually being merged into Echinopsis. However, many modern specialists and collectors still maintain Lobivia as a distinct group because of its unique high-altitude biology and day-blooming, brightly colored flowers, which differ significantly from the nocturnal, white-flowered Echinopsis.
