Product Details
Sculpted Emerald: Mammillaria compressa cv. Yokan Crest
A rare, undulating masterpiece featuring the dense, coral-like growth of a prized Japanese selection.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Mammillaria comes from the Latin mammilla (nipple), referring to the characteristic tubercles.
The species name compressa describes its tightly packed growth habit. The cultivar name 'Yokan' is derived from a traditional Japanese thick, jellied dessert, chosen to describe the smooth, dense, and "fleshy" appearance of this specific crested mutation popularized by Japanese succulent breeders. - Morphology: This plant exhibits fasciation, a growth mutation where the apical meristem (growth point) stretches into a fan-like ridge rather than a circle. This creates a crested form with a wavy, convoluted epidermis. It features small, woolly axils and short, stout spines that line the top of the ridge. Unlike the standard species, the "Yokan" variant is prized for its exceptionally thick, sculptural folds and deep green hue.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a specialized cultivar of Mammillaria compressa, which is native to the limestone hills of Central Mexico. The "Yokan" crest is a product of horticultural selection, likely originating from Japanese nurseries known for refining crested mutations. Our specimens are exclusively nursery-propagated, ensuring the protection of wild Mexican populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a high-drainage mineral-based mix (60% coarse sand/lava rock, 40% potting soil). Ensure the pot has ample drainage to protect the sensitive crested base.
- Light: Thrives in filtered bright light. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from harsh afternoon sun during peak summer to avoid "sun-scald" on the crest's ridges.
- Water/Dormancy: Water sparingly; allow the medium to dry out completely. During the Indian monsoon, keep the plant in a well-ventilated, dry area to prevent rot in the tight folds. Reduce water significantly from November to February.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The parent species, Mammillaria compressa, was one of the many cacti documented by European botanists in the early 19th century as "Mother of Pearl" cacti due to their milky sap and iridescent spines. The crested "Yokan" form is biologically fascinating because it represents a rare genetic "error" that collectors have spent decades stabilizing to ensure the mutation persists through generations of grafting and cuttings.
