Mammillaria geminispina 'Nobilis'
Origin of Name
The genus name "Mammillaria" is derived from the Latin word 'mammilla', meaning 'nipple' or 'teat', referencing the tubercles or nipple-like projections from which the spines emerge. The species name 'geminispina' comes from Latin, meaning 'twin spines', indicative of the paired spines that are characteristic of this species. The variety 'Nobilis' suggests a noble or distinguished form within the species, referencing its particularly attractive longer white spines.
Technical Description of Plant
Its cylindrical stem has many rounded tubercles. This species is one of the spiniest of the Mammillaria genus. It has white areoles, from which numerous spines grow: white and flat, which almost completely hide the green stem of the plant; and several longer and stronger black-tipped spines. This variety is also known for its striking ring of pink or purplish flowers that bloom around the top of the cactus in spring, adding to its appeal. The flowers are bell-shaped and contrast beautifully with the white spines. The spines of cultivar geminispina are really long. They take time to develop as the plants get older.
Origin of Plant
Mammillaria geminispina is native to Central Mexico, typically found in rocky or grassy areas. 'Nobilis', as a specific variety, has been cultivated for its distinct characteristics and does not occur naturally in the wild. It represents a selection bred for ornamental horticulture.
Conservation Status
Mammillaria geminispina as a species is not listed as endangered. The variety 'Nobilis', being cultivated, does not face any direct threats and is not subject to conservation status. The cultivation of such plants in gardens and collections helps to reduce the pressure on wild populations.
Care Instructions
Mammillaria geminispina 'Nobilis' prefers a sunny position but can tolerate light shade. It requires well-draining soil, typical of cacti. Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and reduce watering in the winter. It is not frost-tolerant, so it should be protected from freezing temperatures. Fertilize lightly with a cactus-specific fertilizer during the growing season to promote flowering.
