Product Details
Winter Jewel: Mammillaria hernandezii
A miniature masterpiece prized by collectors for its rare winter blooms and geometric precision.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Mammillaria is derived from the Latin mammilla, meaning "nipple" or "teat," referring to the distinct tuberous tubercles that characterize these cacti.
This specific species was named in honor of Eulalio Hernández, a Mexican plant enthusiast who assisted botanists in the field. It was formally described in 1963 by Glass and Foster, becoming a sought-after rarity in the succulent hobby shortly thereafter. - Morphology: This is a geophytic, globose cactus that remains small, usually under 3 cm in diameter. It features a dark green epidermis covered in small, rounded tubercles. Instead of long spines, it possesses pectinate (comb-like) white radial spines that lie flat against the plant body, creating a starry, frosted appearance. Unlike many cacti, it produces relatively large, vivid magenta flowers directly from the axils during the shortest days of the year.
- Habitat & Origin: Mammillaria hernandezii is a wild species endemic to a very restricted range in Oaxaca, Mexico.
It grows in volcanic soils at high altitudes. Because of its limited natural distribution, it is considered "Near Threatened" in the wild; therefore, buyers should ensure they are purchasing specimens propagated from nursery-grown seeds or offsets to support sustainable trade. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix. A ratio of 70% inorganic material (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) to 30% organic matter is ideal to prevent root rot in India's humid regions.
- Light: High-intensity filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide bright morning sun but protect from the scorching overhead afternoon heat, which can sunburn the small body.
- Water/Dormancy: Extremely sensitive to overwatering.
Water sparingly during the growing season and keep completely dry during the monsoon and winter. The plant is winter-flowering but requires a "dry rest" to trigger bud development.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Mammillaria hernandezii is a "cryptocarpic" plant.
This means the fruit and seeds mature inside the body of the plant rather than being pushed out. The seeds often remain embedded within the mother plant’s tissue for years, only being released into the environment when the parent plant sustains damage or eventually dies, a unique survival strategy for its harsh volcanic habitat.
