1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Mammillaria is derived from the Latin mammilla, meaning "nipple" or "teat," referring to the distinct tuberous tubercles that characterize these cacti. This specific species was named in honor of Eulalio Hernández, a Mexican plant enthusiast who assisted botanists in the field. It was formally described in 1963 by Glass and Foster, becoming a sought-after rarity in the succulent hobby shortly thereafter.
2. Morphology: This is a geophytic, globose cactus that remains small, usually under 3 cm in diameter. It features a dark green epidermis covered in small, rounded tubercles. Instead of long spines, it possesses pectinate (comb-like) white radial spines that lie flat against the plant body, creating a starry, frosted appearance. Unlike many cacti, it produces relatively large, vivid magenta flowers directly from the axils during the shortest days of the year.
