Mediolobivia Pygmae
Product Details
Miniature Marvel: Mediolobivia pygmaea
A resilient high-altitude gem, prized by collectors for its compact architecture and prolific, vibrant floral displays.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Mediolobivia is derived from the Latin medius (middle), referring to its intermediate botanical position between the genera Lobivia and Rebutia. The specific epithet pygmaea originates from the Greek pygmaios, meaning "dwarfish," a direct reference to its diminutive stature. It was formally described in the early 20th century as botanists sought to categorize the diverse, small-bodied cacti found across the Andean highlands.
- Morphology: This geophytic cactus features a cylindrical to globose epidermis, often exhibiting tinges of purple or bronze when exposed to bright light.
It is characterized by distinct costae (ribs) divided into small tubercles, from which short, pectinate spines emerge. Its most striking feature is the production of oversized, funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from the base of the plant, often outsizing the body itself. - Habitat & Origin: Mediolobivia pygmaea is a wild species native to the high-elevation rocky outcrops of the Andes, spanning from Southern Bolivia to Northern Argentina.
These plants are sourced from ethical, nursery-grown stock to ensure the protection of wild populations and promote sustainable horticultural practices. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (50% volcanic pumice or grit, 20% perlite, 30% coarse sand/loam). Avoid peat-heavy soils which retain excess moisture in humid Indian climates.
- Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight to maintain its compact form and induce flowering. In extreme North Indian summers, provide 30% shade cloth during peak afternoon hours to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" method during the growing season (March–October). Implement strict winter dormancy from November to February by withholding water entirely; this cool, dry period is essential for bud formation.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: For decades, Mediolobivia pygmaea was the subject of intense taxonomic debate. Because it shares the pollen structure of Rebutia but the floral tube characteristics of Lobivia, it has been moved between genera multiple times. Modern DNA sequencing has recently solidified its placement, yet many traditional collectors still prefer the "Medio" designation to highlight its unique evolutionary bridge between the two groups.
