Monvillea Spegazzinii Forma Crest (Type B) (Syn: Cereus Spegazzinii)
Product Details
Sculptural Masterpiece: Monvillea spegazzinii f. cristata (Type B)
An architectural marvel featuring marble-patterned stems and rare, fan-like growth patterns for the discerning collector.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Monvillea was named in honor of Monsieur de Monville, a prominent 19th-century French cactus collector. The species epithet spegazzinii commemorates Carlos Luis Spegazzini, a renowned Italian-Argentine botanist who extensively documented South American flora in the late 1800s. The "Type B" designation distinguishes this specific sculptural form from other cristate (crested) variations of the species.
- Morphology: This specimen exhibits a "cristate" growth habit, where the apical meristem (growth tip) stretches into a ridge, creating a fan-like or brain-like structure rather than a standard cylinder. It features a glaucous, blue-green epidermis adorned with distinct marble-like white mottled patterns. The areoles are small and dark, occasionally producing short spines, while the undulating costae (ribs) create a dense, convoluted mass.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a specialized horticultural cultivar of a species native to the Gran Chaco region spanning Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil. While the base species is wild, the crested "Type B" form is maintained through careful vegetative propagation in nurseries. Choosing nursery-grown crested forms supports sustainability by preventing the illegal poaching of rare mutations from the wild.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a gritty, mineral-based mix (50% crushed pumice or perlite, 25% coarse sand, 25% organic matter) to ensure rapid drainage.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from harsh afternoon sun (above 35°C) to prevent epidermis scorching, especially during May and June.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" method. Provide regular water during the monsoon/summer growing season but maintain strict dryness during the winter dormancy period (November to February) to prevent root rot in humid Indian winters.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Monvillea spegazzinii is a "night-bloomer." In its non-crested form, it produces massive, fragrant white flowers that open at dusk and wither by sunrise, specifically adapted to be pollinated by nocturnal hawkmoths. Even in its crested state, the plant retains the genetic "blueprints" for these spectacular nocturnal displays, though flowers are rarer on cristate forms.
