Myrtillocactus geometrizans elite crest Rooted
Product Details
Geometric Blue Architecture: Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristata 'Elite'
A premier glaucous specimen featuring dense, coral-like undulations that represent the pinnacle of crested cactus aesthetics.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Myrtillocactus is a portmanteau of the Latin myrtillus (small myrtle) and cactus, referring to its small, berry-like edible fruits. The specific epithet geometrizans was coined by Italian botanist Michelangelo Console in 1897, inspired by the precise, geometric symmetry of the plant's rib structure. The "Elite" designation refers to specific nursery-selected clones that exhibit tighter, more symmetrical fan-like cresting than standard mutations.
- Morphology: This "Elite" crest displays an intensified pruinose epidermis, a waxy, powder-blue coating that protects the plant from UV radiation. Unlike the standard columnar form, this mutation occurs when the apical meristem divides laterally, creating a convoluted, fan-shaped growth. The traditional costae (ribs) are compressed into a singular, winding ridge, and the areoles—bearing short, dark spines—are clustered tightly along the undulating margins.
- Habitat & Origin: The base species is a foundational element of the matorral shrublands in Central and Northern Mexico.
However, the "Elite" crest is a highly stable cultivar. It is propagated exclusively through vegetative cloning (grafting or cuttings) to maintain its specific aesthetic lineage. This method ensures commercial availability without the exploitation of wild populations, making it a sustainable choice for collectors. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires an open, mineral-based mix. Use 60% grit (coarse sand, crushed gravel, or scoria) and 40% organic matter to ensure rapid drainage, which is critical during the high-humidity Indian monsoon.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or filtered 50% shade. In the Indian subcontinent, direct midday summer sun can scorch the delicate crest; morning sun is ideal to enhance the blue "bloom" on the epidermis.
- Water/Dormancy: Provide regular deep watering from March to September, allowing the medium to dry completely between applications. Reduce water significantly in October and maintain strict dry conditions during the winter months to prevent rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The fruit of the Myrtillocactus, known in Mexico as garambullo, has been harvested for centuries and was a significant food source for indigenous peoples.
Interestingly, the blue waxy coating (epicuticular wax) that makes this "Elite" form so desirable to collectors is actually a biological adaptation that reflects infrared light, keeping the plant’s internal temperature significantly lower than the surrounding air.
