Neon Pothos, Epipremnum 'Neon', Golden Money Plant
Product Details
Electrifying Radiance: Epipremnum aureum 'Neon'
Illuminate your indoor jungle with this high-visibility cultivar, prized for its consistent, heart-shaped leaves of shocking electric lime.
- Origin & History of Name: The name Epipremnum is derived from the Greek epi (upon) and premnon (trunk), referencing its natural growth habit as a tree-climbing liana.
The cultivar name 'Neon' was chosen to highlight its distinct lack of chlorophyll-heavy forest greens, resulting in a bright, neon-yellow appearance. In the Indian subcontinent, it is often called the "Golden Money Plant," reflecting the cultural belief that it attracts prosperity and "Vastu" harmony. - Morphology: This plant features a waxy epidermis that minimizes water loss, making it highly resilient. Unlike its wild relatives, 'Neon' lacks typical chlorophyll-rich variegation, exhibiting a uniform, brilliant chartreuse across the entire leaf blade. It grows via adventitious roots that emerge from nodes, allowing it to climb or trail while maintaining its characteristic cordate (heart-shaped) leaf structure.
- Habitat & Origin: The 'Neon' Pothos is a cultivar, meaning it does not exist in the wild but was selectively bred from the parent species Epipremnum aureum (native to French Polynesia). It is produced sustainably through tissue culture and stem cuttings, which prevents the poaching of wild specimens and ensures genetic consistency.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: A well-draining, porous mix consisting of coco-peat, perlite, and coarse river sand. Avoid heavy clay soils common in some Indian regions.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. In Indian summers, keep away from direct afternoon sun to prevent "leaf scorch," but ensure high light levels to maintain the neon color.
- Water/Dormancy: Water when the top inch of the medium feels dry. During the humid monsoon, reduce frequency. It undergoes a slight growth slowdown (dormancy) during the cooler months of December and January in Northern India.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Epipremnum aureum is often called "the plant that cannot die" or "Devil's Ivy" because it is nearly impossible to kill and remains green even in total darkness. Interestingly, scientists have discovered that this species is "shy-flowering"—it hasn't been observed blooming in the wild since 1962 because it lacks the genetic ability to produce enough gibberellin, a hormone required for flower development.
