Notocactus crassigibbus crest
Product Details
Sculptural Rarity: Notocactus crassigibbus f. cristata
A mesmerizing, fan-shaped architectural marvel that transforms the classic globular cactus into a living piece of ribbon-like art.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Notocactus stems from the Greek notios (southern), denoting its South American roots.
The specific epithet crassigibbus is derived from the Latin crassus (thick) and gibbus (humped), describing the plant’s chunky, rounded ribs. It was formally described in the 1970s, though many taxonomists now classify it under the genus Parodia. The "crest" or cristata designation refers to a rare genetic mutation. - Morphology: This specimen exhibits fasciation, a mutation where the apical meristem (growth point) stretches into a line rather than a single point, creating a wavy, brain-like fold. It features a glaucous green epidermis (skin) with a smooth, almost waxy texture. Unlike the standard form's symmetrical costae (ribs), the crested version produces dense, undulating ridges topped with short, soft radials that accentuate its sculptural form.
- Habitat & Origin: The standard species is native to the pampas of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
However, this crested form is a cultivar propagated in specialized nurseries. Because crested mutations rarely survive in the wild due to slower growth and vulnerability, these are sustainably lab-grown or grafted by collectors to ensure the survival of the genetic line without depleting wild populations. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: A strictly mineral-based mix (60% grit/pumice/perlite, 40% organic matter). Avoid standard garden soil to prevent root rot.
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian context, provide 40–50% shade cloth during harsh April–June summers to prevent epidermis scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is bone-dry. During the humid Indian monsoon, withhold water entirely unless the plant shows shriveling. In winter, enter a dry dormancy to encourage health.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The "cresting" phenomenon is essentially a botanical accident—a "controlled tumor" that occurs when a plant's cells divide at an accelerated, lateral rate. While most plants grow "up," the crested Notocactus grows "outward" indefinitely. Historically, these were so prized in 19th-century European collections that they were often referred to as "monstrous" forms, a term that stuck in botanical Latin (monstrosa) for decades.
