Fiery Crown of the South: Notocactus haselbergii

A masterclass in symmetry, this "Scarlet Ball" cactus is a prized centerpiece for collectors seeking vibrant, early-season blooms.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Notocactus is derived from the Greek notos, meaning "south," referencing its South American origins. The specific epithet haselbergii honors Dr. von Haselberg, a 19th-century German physician and avid cactus enthusiast. While often reclassified under Parodia by modern taxonomists, the name Notocactus remains the preferred commercial and historical designation for these spherical, clumping species.
  2. Morphology: This species is characterized by a flattened globose (spherical) stem covered in a dense "frost" of fine, silvery-white spines. It features approximately 30–50 low costae (ribs) that are often obscured by the bristle-like radials. Unlike many cacti, its epidermis remains hidden behind this white mesh, which serves to reflect intense UV radiation. The plant is famous for its crown of deep orange-to-scarlet flowers that emerge from the apex (top).
  3. Habitat & Origin: Notocactus haselbergii is a wild species native to the high-altitude rocky outcrops and grasslands of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is not a man-made cultivar. Our specimens are nursery-propagated via sustainable practices to prevent the illegal poaching of wild populations in their native fragmented habitat.
  4. Cultivation Profile: * Substrate: Requires a gritty, strictly mineral-based mix (pumice, perlite, and coarse sand) with minimal organic matter to prevent root rot.
    • Light: Thrives in bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from the harsh midday summer sun to prevent scorching; East-facing balconies are ideal.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply but infrequently during the monsoon and summer when the soil is bone-dry. Observe a strict dry dormancy from November to February to trigger spring flowering.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: This species is biologically unique for its exceptionally long-lasting blooms. While many cactus flowers wither within 24 to 48 hours, the flowers of Notocactus haselbergii can remain open and vibrant for up to three weeks, an evolutionary strategy to ensure pollination in its specific high-altitude environment.
