Notocactus leninghausii Crest
Product Details
Golden Sculpture: Notocactus leninghausii f. cristata
A rare, serpentine marvel that transforms the classic Golden Ball into a unique, living work of art.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Notocactus derives from the Greek notos, meaning "south," referencing its South American roots.
The species name honors Wilhelm Leninghaus (1845–1918), a German-born cactus enthusiast who moved to Brazil and collected specimens for European botanists. The "Crest" or cristata designation refers to a rare genetic mutation where the growing point elongates into a ridge rather than a single circular apex. - Morphology: This specimen exhibits "fasciation," a mutation where the apical meristem grows laterally. Instead of a standard cylinder, the epidermis folds into intricate, brain-like undulations. It is densely covered in soft, golden setae (bristle-like spines) that emerge from closely set areoles.
Unlike the straight costae (ribs) of the standard form, the crest's ribs are convoluted and winding. - Habitat & Origin: While the nominal species is native to the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil, the Crested form is a specialized cultivar maintained through vegetative propagation. In the wild, the species is considered "Endangered" due to habitat loss; however, these crested variations are sustainably nursery-grown, ensuring no impact on wild populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (50% crushed brick or cinder, 25% perlite/pumice, 25% organic compost). Avoid standard garden soil which retains too much humidity in Indian climates.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light.
In India, provide 4–6 hours of morning sun, but use 50% shade netting during peak summer afternoons to prevent scorching the delicate crest folds. - Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is bone-dry. During the monsoon, withhold water entirely to prevent fungal rot in the folds. Reduce watering significantly from November to February during its natural dormancy.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The "Golden Ball" group was long a subject of botanical dispute. For decades, it was classified under Eriocactus and later Parodia. Collectors still prize the leninghausii specifically because, unlike many cacti that become leggy or sparse with age, this species actually becomes more densely "golden" as it matures, earning it the nickname "Lemon Ball" in early 20th-century European greenhouses.
