Product Details
Golden Tower: Notocactus leninghausii
A stunning architectural centerpiece featuring dense, harmless golden spines that illuminate any arid collection.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Notocactus is derived from the Greek notos, meaning "south," referencing its Southern Hemisphere origin.
The species epithet leninghausii honors Friedrich Wilhelm Leninghaus (1845–1931), a German-born collector and grower who emigrated to Brazil. It was formally described by botanist Karl Moritz Schumann in 1895. The synonym Eriocactus refers to the "wooly" (Greek erion) apex found on mature specimens. - Morphology: This columnar cactus is distinguished by its epidermis completely obscured by soft, setaceous (bristle-like) golden spines. It features approximately 30 low costae (ribs) that allow the plant to expand during water uptake. A unique characteristic is the slanted, wooly apex (growing tip), which naturally tilts toward the sun.
In maturity, it produces large, silky yellow flowers. - Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to the Rio Grande do Sul region of Southern Brazil.
It grows on steep, rocky slopes at elevations between 300 and 1,300 meters. Our specimens are nursery-propagated via sustainable cultivation practices to protect declining wild populations in their native habitat. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (50% volcanic pumice or crushed gravel, 20% coarse sand, and 30% organic compost). In the Indian climate, ensure high porosity to prevent root rot during monsoon humidity.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In India, provide 4–6 hours of morning sun; protect with 50% shade cloth during extreme North Indian summer afternoons (40°C+) to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" cycle during the growing season (March–October). Enter a strict dry dormancy from November to February; withhold water entirely as the plant rests during the cooler Indian winter.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Unlike many of its prickly relatives, Notocactus leninghausii is often called the "harmless" cactus because its spines are flexible and soft to the touch rather than rigid or hooked.
Interestingly, its habit of tilting its crown toward the sun—a phenomenon called phototropism—is so pronounced that it earned the nickname "The Tower of Pisa" among early European hobbyists.
