Golden-Flowered Caudex: Pachypodium cactipes

A rare Madagascar jewel prized by collectors for its brilliant yellow blooms and sculptural, bottle-shaped form.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Pachypodium is derived from the Greek pachys (thick) and podion (foot), referencing the swollen succulent base. The specific epithet cactipes translates to "cactus-footed," a name chosen by British botanist Sir William Jackson Hooker in the 19th century to describe the plant's spiny, cactus-like appearance despite it being a member of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae).
  2. Morphology: This species is a pachycaul (thick-stemmed) succulent characterized by a globose, silver-grey epidermis that stores water. It produces multiple short, tapered branches covered in paired spines. Unlike many of its upright relatives, P. cactipes is notably brevicaul (short-stemmed), staying low to the ground. Its leaves are deciduous, and its flowers are bright yellow with a salverform corolla.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species endemic to the Madagascar province of Antsiranana, specifically the Diana region. It grows on sun-drenched gneiss and granite outcrops. Our specimens are nursery-grown from seed to ensure the conservation of wild populations and adhere to CITES sustainability standards.
  4. Cultivation Profile (Indian Context):
    • Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% inorganic). Combine coarse silica sand, pumice or perlite, and a small amount of leaf mold. Avoid standard garden soil which retains too much moisture during the monsoon.
    • Light: Requires full, direct sunlight (6–8 hours). In North India’s peak summer (45o), provide 30% shade cloth to prevent epidermal scorching; in coastal regions, full sun is ideal year-round.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly during the hot growing season (March–September) once the substrate is dry. Strictly withhold water during the winter dormancy (November–February) when the plant drops its leaves to prevent root rot in high-humidity regions.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Pachypodium cactipes was long considered a subspecies of Pachypodium rosulatum. However, it was elevated to full species status due to its distinct geographic isolation and its unique "creeping" growth habit, which allows it to withstand the intense winds of the Malagasy highlands better than its taller cousins.
