Pleiospilos nelii Royal Flush Split Rock
Product Details
A captivating "living stone" mimicry plant, coveted for its deep violet-bronze coloration and orchid-like tangerine blooms.
- Origin & History of Name The genus Pleiospilos is derived from the Greek pleios (full/many) and spilos (dots), referring to the tiny dark spots (stomata/windows) covering the leaves. The specific epithet nelii honors South African botanist Gert Cornelius Nel. The cultivar name 'Royal Flush' was chosen by horticulturists to highlight its regal, deep purple-red pigmentation, distinguishing it from the standard green species.
- Morphology This mesemb (mimicry plant) forms a hemispherical body composed of two to four opposite, extremely succulent leaves fused at the base, separated by a deep central fissure. The epidermis is smooth, rubbery, and colored a vibrant reddish-purple or bronze, densely speckled with translucent idioblasts (dots) that facilitate photosynthesis. Unlike other living stones, it produces relatively large, showy flowers—apricot to orange with white centers—that emerge from the central cleft in the afternoon.
- Habitat & Origin The species Pleiospilos nelii is native to the semi-arid Karoo region of South Africa, where it grows in quartz patches mimicking local stones to avoid predation. The 'Royal Flush' cultivar, however, is a nursery-bred selection. It is propagated via seed in controlled environments to maintain its unique purple hue, ensuring no impact on fragile wild ecosystems.
- Cultivation Profile
- Substrate: Demands a highly inorganic, low-nutrient mix (e.g., 80-90% pumice/grit, 10-20% soil) to prevent rot.
- Light: Requires high-intensity direct light. Insufficient sun causes the purple color to fade to green and the leaves to stack unnaturally (etiolate).
- Water/Dormancy: Extremely sensitive to overwatering. Water only during growing periods (spring/early autumn) and strictly avoid water when the outer leaves are shriveling (transferring moisture to new leaves).
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote Pleiospilos nelii has a unique biological cycle compared to other succulents. It typically maintains only one or two pairs of leaves at a time. The new pair emerges from the center, slowly consuming the moisture and nutrients from the old pair, which eventually withers to a paper-thin husk. This survival mechanism allows the plant to recycle its own water resources efficiently in extreme droughts.
