Plumeria (Frangipani) Champa
Product Details
The Tropical Elegance of Plumeria rubra (Champa)
An architectural masterpiece known for its intoxicating fragrance and sculptural, wax-like blooms.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name honors 17th-century French botanist Charles Plumier, who documented the species during his voyages to the New World.
The common name "Frangipani" is traced to the 16th-century Italian nobleman Marquis Muzio Frangipani, who created a popular perfume used to scent gloves that closely mimicked the plant's natural aroma. In the Indian subcontinent, it is known as "Champa," a name rooted in Sanskrit (Campaka), deeply embedded in Vedic literature and temple traditions. - Morphology: Plumeria is a deciduous succulent shrub characterized by its thick, pachycaul stems and a milky, latex-rich sap.
The leaves are obovate with a prominent marginal vein (common to the Apocynaceae family) and distinct costae (parallel side veins). The flowers feature a salverform corolla with five overlapping petals, possessing a waxy epidermis that minimizes transpirational water loss, allowing the blooms to remain fresh long after being plucked. - Habitat & Origin: While naturalized across India, Plumeria rubra is a wild species native to Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela. It thrives in seasonally dry tropical forests. The specimens provided are sustainably propagated via lignified stem cuttings, ensuring the preservation of wild populations while maintaining genetic consistency in flower color and fragrance profile.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a highly porous, mineral-based mix. A blend of coarse river sand, perlite, and garden soil (1:1:1 ratio) is ideal to prevent stagnant moisture at the root zone.
- Light: Full heliophilic requirements; necessitates at least 6–8 hours of direct Indian sun to trigger profuse flowering.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" cycle. In the Indian winter (November–February), the plant enters obligate dormancy, shedding leaves. Irrigation must be strictly reduced or halted during this period to prevent apical rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Plumeria flowers are biologically unique because they do not produce nectar.
They utilize "deceptive pollination," emitting a powerful scent at night to mimic nectar-rich flowers. This tricks Sphinx moths into transferring pollen as they fly from flower to flower in a futile search for a reward—a highly efficient evolutionary survival strategy.
