Floral Spectacle: Rebutia cv. Celebration

A prolific bloomer featuring a vibrant explosion of multi-toned flowers that transform any collection into a festive display.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus Rebutia was named by botanist Karl Moritz Schumann in 1895 in honor of Pierre Rebut, a French cactus specialist and nurseryman. The cultivar name 'Celebration' was chosen to reflect the plant’s characteristic habit of producing a dense, simultaneous "crown" of flowers that covers the entire body of the cactus.
  2. Morphology: This cactus features a globose (spherical) body with a bright green epidermis that tends to cluster or "offset" over time. Instead of prominent costae (ribs), the body is covered in small, spirally arranged tubercles. Each tubercle is topped with a soft, bristly areole containing fine, non-aggressive spines. Its primary appeal is the large, funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from the base of the plant rather than the apex.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a horticultural cultivar bred from species originally native to the high-altitude grasslands of the Andes Mountains in Bolivia and Northern Argentina. Our nursery specimens are produced through sustainable vegetative propagation (cloning), ensuring the preservation of the specific 'Celebration' bloom characteristics without exploiting wild habitats.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (60% cinder or crushed brick, 20% perlite, 20% leaf mold). Good drainage is vital for the Indian monsoon.
    • Light: Prefers bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian plains, provide green shade netting (50%) during summer to prevent the epidermis from yellowing or scorching.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry during the spring flowering season. Maintain strict dryness from November to February; this cool, dry dormancy is essential to trigger the next season's flower buds.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Rebutia species are unique among many cacti because their flowers develop from the oldest areoles at the base of the plant, rather than the new growth at the top. Historically, they were among the first cacti to become popular "windowsill" plants in Europe because they remain small and can produce flowers within just two to three years of being grown from seed.
