Product Details
Prolific Blooms: Rebutia hybrid
A compact powerhouse of the cactus world, prized for its ability to produce a literal crown of vibrant, multi-generational flowers.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Rebutia was named by French botanist Karl Moritz Schumann in 1895 to honor Pierre Rebut, a French cactus nurseryman and dealer of the late 19th century. The term "hybrid" indicates a selective crossbreed between species within the genus (or closely related Sulcorebutia), designed to enhance floral size, color stability, and overall vigor.
- Morphology: This hybrid features a globular to short-cylindrical epidermis (outer skin) covered in small, spirally arranged tubercles (nodules) rather than continuous costae (ribs). Each areole produces soft, bristly spines that provide protection without being overly aggressive. Its primary distinction is its "basal blooming" habit, where flowers emerge from the base of the plant rather than the crown, creating a wreath-like effect.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a nursery-raised cultivar. While its ancestral species originate from high-altitude regions of the Andes Mountains in Bolivia and Northern Argentina, this hybrid is bred specifically for container stability and aesthetic uniformity. Commercial breeding ensures these plants are produced sustainably via seed or offsets, protecting wild populations from illegal poaching.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: A strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite to 30% organic matter) to prevent root rot.
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight; in the Indian context, morning sun is ideal, but protection is required during harsh 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM summer peaks to avoid scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Deep watering only when the substrate is bone-dry. During the Indian monsoon and winter, reduce watering significantly to trigger a "cool dry" dormancy, which is essential for spring bud induction.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Rebutia species are famous in the botanical world for being among the fastest cacti to reach flowering maturity. While many genera take decades to bloom, Rebutia hybrids can often produce their first spectacular floral display within just two to three years of germination, making them a cornerstone of modern succulent breeding.
