Product Details
Magenta Jewel: Rebutia hybrid
An ultra-compact floriferous marvel featuring high-saturation magenta blooms that frequently eclipse the plant body.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Rebutia was named by botanist Karl Moritz Schumann in 1895 in honor of Pierre Rebut, a French cactus specialist and nurseryman. The name serves as a historical link to the 19th-century European fascination with South American succulents. This specific hybrid is part of a breeding line focused on maximizing floral diameter and color intensity within the "Crown Cactus" group.
- Morphology: This specimen exhibits a globular growth habit with a tuberculate epidermis (surfaced with small bumps rather than continuous ribs). Unlike many cacti that bloom from the apex, this hybrid is basal-flowering, producing magenta blossoms from the lower areoles. The petals possess a distinct satin-like sheen, surrounding a dense cluster of cream-colored stamens.
- Habitat & Origin: This plant is a cultivar derived from species originally native to the high-altitude Andean regions of Bolivia and Northern Argentina. It has been selectively bred for greenhouse stability and ornamental appeal. Our production utilizes sustainable seed-raising and offset division, avoiding any impact on vulnerable montane ecosystems.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly gritty, mineral-based mix (e.g., 60% volcanic rock or coarse sand and 40% organic leaf mold). Proper drainage is critical for the delicate root system.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, provide protection from the harsh overhead sun; a bright balcony or a 50% shade-net house is ideal to prevent "burning" the epidermis.
- Water/Dormancy: Provide regular water during the growing season (March–September), allowing the mix to dry between applications. In the Indian winter, maintain cool, dry conditions to trigger the following season's heavy blooming cycle.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Rebutia species are unique in the cactus world because they often begin flowering when they are barely a year old and less than two centimeters in diameter. Historically, they were among the first "miniature" cacti to become popular in indoor collections because their small size allowed 19th-century enthusiasts to maintain diverse "tabletop" botanical gardens.
