Rebutia pygmaea var. diersiana hybrid
Product Details
Sunset Radiance: Rebutia pygmaea var. diersiana Hybrid
A prolific bloomer featuring a rare sunset-gradient flower that transforms any collection into a vibrant desert landscape.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Rebutia honors P. Rebut, a 19th-century French cactus specialist.
The species name pygmaea is Latin for "dwarf," denoting its miniature stature, while the variety diersiana honors the German botanist Prof. Dr. Lothar Diers. This specific hybrid is named for its unique floral mutation that deviates from the standard monocolored blooms of the parent species. - Morphology: This cactus features a cylindrical, dark green epidermis that often turns purplish under high light. It is characterized by small, spiral costae (ribs) covered in short, pectinate spines that lay flat against the body. The standout feature is its infundibuliform (funnel-shaped) flowers, which showcase rounded, slightly pointed petals displaying a distinct bicolor gradient from deep orange to sunny yellow.
- Habitat & Origin: This plant is a horticultural cultivar hybrid. While the parent Rebutia pygmaea originates from the high-altitude Andean regions of Bolivia and Northern Argentina, this specific color form was developed through selective cross-breeding in cultivation. Our stock is produced through sustainable laboratory or greenhouse propagation to ensure no disturbance to alpine ecosystems.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (60% volcanic rock or coarse sand, 40% compost).
- Light: Thrives in full morning sun but requires afternoon shade in the Indian subcontinent to prevent the epidermis from overheating during peak summer.
- Water/Dormancy: Apply the "soak and dry" method during the growing season. In the Indian monsoon, keep the plant completely dry in a well-ventilated area. Winter requires a cool, dry dormancy to trigger the following year's buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Rebutia species are unique because their flowers emerge from the basal areoles (the bottom of the plant) rather than the crown. This was a key factor in early botanical debates, leading some taxonomists to originally classify them under the genus Aylostera before DNA sequencing confirmed their close relationship within the Rebutia group.
