Rebutia hybrid Magenta Constellation Grafted
Product Details
Vivid Nebula: Rebutia hybrid 'Magenta Constellation'
A high-frequency bloomer featuring a spectacular crown of neon-magenta flowers that eclipse its compact, silver-spined form.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Rebutia was named in 1895 by Karl Schumann to honor P. Rebut, a noted French cactus dealer and nurseryman of the 19th century. The cultivar name 'Magenta Constellation' is a descriptive horticultural moniker, chosen to reflect the plant’s habit of producing numerous brilliant flowers simultaneously, resembling a dense star cluster against the dark backdrop of its body.
- Morphology: This hybrid is a globose, clumping cactus characterized by a dark green epidermis densely covered in short, pectinate (comb-like) white spines. Unlike many cacti, it lacks distinct costae (ribs), instead featuring small, spirally arranged tubercles.
Its most striking feature is the production of large, funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from the base of the plant rather than the apex, a classic trait of the Rebutia genus. - Habitat & Origin: This plant is a man-made cultivar, a product of selective hybridization between species native to the high-altitude Andes of Bolivia and Argentina. It does not exist in the wild. This specimen is propagated through sustainable greenhouse division and offsets, ensuring no wild habitat is disturbed.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (coarse sand, lava rock, or perlite mixed with minimal compost). In the Indian subcontinent, excellent drainage is critical to survive the high humidity of the monsoon.
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered sunlight. In Northern India, protect from the scorching afternoon sun in May and June; in coastal regions, provide maximum brightness to keep the plant compact.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly once the medium is bone-dry during the growing season. Maintain strict winter dormancy from December to February by keeping it dry and cool; this "rest" period is essential for the plant to set its signature magenta flower buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Rebutia species were among the first "miniature" cacti to become popular in Europe because they can flower when they are only a year or two old. In their native Andean habitats, these plants have evolved to grow in rock crevices at altitudes up to 4,000 meters, making them surprisingly resilient to temperature fluctuations compared to lowland tropical cacti.
