Sansevieria masoniana variegated (Whale fin)
Product Details
Monolithic Elegance: Sansevieria masoniana Variegated
A singular, cream-streaked living sculpture that represents the pinnacle of rare architectural foliage.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus was historically named after Raimondo di Sangro, the Prince of San Severo. The specific epithet masoniana honors Maurice Mason, a renowned English plant collector who discovered the species.
Although reclassified by some taxonomists into the genus Dracaena, it remains known globally by its established name. The "Whale Fin" moniker is a descriptive trade name referencing the leaf’s distinct cetacean silhouette. - Morphology: This specimen is characterized by its exceptionally broad, coriaceous (leathery) blade. It features longitudinal variegation, manifesting as unstable ivory or pale-yellow striations against a mottled dark-green epidermis.
Unlike most Dracaenaceae, this species often presents as a solitary, massive leaf emerging from a thick underground rhizome, possessing a distinct fibrous margin that may turn reddish-brown with age. - Habitat & Origin: The base species is a wild succulent native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa.
The variegated form is a rare cultivar selected from limb sports in cultivation. Our specimens are produced via sustainable rhizome division, ensuring the genetic stability of the variegation without impacting wild populations. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a highly porous, coarse mineral-based mix. A blend of 60% grit (pumice or expanded clay) and 40% organic compost is ideal for preventing moisture retention around the rhizome.
- Light: Thrives in bright indirect light. While it survives in low light, the cream variegation requires high luminous intensity to maintain its vibrancy. Protect from the scorching midday sun of the Indian plains to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water/Dormancy: Highly drought-tolerant.
In the Indian subcontinent, water sparingly once every 2–3 weeks during the growing season. During the winter months or peak monsoon humidity, the plant enters a semi-dormant state; reduce watering to once a month to avoid fungal pathogens.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Maurice Mason originally collected this plant in the 1940s, but it remained an unnamed "mystery Sansevieria" in his greenhouse for decades. It wasn't formally described and named Sansevieria masoniana until 2000, nearly 60 years after its initial discovery, proving that even massive, conspicuous species can remain "hidden" from science for generations.
