Andean Geometric Marvel: Sulcorebutia augustinii
An exquisite miniature cactus prized for its pectinate spination and vibrant floral display, perfect for specialized xeric collections.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Sulcorebutia is derived from the Latin sulcus (furrow), referring to the groove above the areole, and Rebutia, honoring French succulent expert Pierre Rebut.
The specific epithet augustinii was named by botanist Gertel in 1989 to honor Günther Augustin, a prominent German cactus enthusiast and explorer who contributed significantly to the study of Bolivian mountain flora. - Morphology: This species is a small, globose cactus known for its dark green to reddish-brown epidermis. It features unique pectinate (comb-like) spines that lie flat against the body, emerging from elongated areoles. Unlike many cacti with prominent costae (ribs), this plant is organized into distinct spiraling tubercles. Its flowers are typically vivid magenta or violet, emerging from the base of the plant rather than the crown.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species endemic to the mountainous regions of Cochabamba, Bolivia, specifically around Pasorapa.
It grows at high altitudes (approx. 2,500m) in rocky crevices. Our specimens are nursery-grown from stabilized seed lines, ensuring the protection of vulnerable wild populations and adherence to sustainable horticultural practices. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires an ultra-porous mineral mix. Use 80% grit (lava rock, pumice, or coarse sand) and 20% organic matter. In the Indian subcontinent, avoid clay-heavy soils which retain lethal moisture.
- Light: High-intensity filtered sunlight. In India, provide 50% shade cloth protection during peak summer afternoons to prevent epidermal scorching, while ensuring maximum brightness for tight spine growth.
- Water/Dormancy: Strict "dry-in-winter" protocol.
Water moderately during the spring/summer growing season once the substrate is bone-dry. During the Indian winter, maintain total aridity to trigger flowering and prevent rot of the sensitive taproot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The classification of this plant is a subject of ongoing botanical debate; many taxonomists now subsume Sulcorebutia into the broader genus Rebutia. However, collectors maintain the distinction because Sulcorebutia species possess a unique "furrow" or notch above the areole—a morphological trait not found in standard Rebutia—making them a distinct evolutionary lineage adapted to high-altitude Andean niches.
