Product Details
Golden Sunburst: Sulcorebutia candida arenacea
A rare Bolivian treasure prized for its dense, sand-colored spines and vibrant floral contrast.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Sulcorebutia derives from the Latin sulcus (groove), referring to the unique furrows above the areoles. The specific epithet arenacea translates to "sandy," describing the plant's textured, grit-like appearance.
It was first described by botanist Martín Cárdenas in 1951, who noted its distinct morphology compared to other highland cacti. - Morphology: This globose cactus features a flattened, disc-like epidermis that stays low to the ground. It is distinguished by its dense covering of pectinate (comb-like) spines that wrap around the costae (ribs), giving it a rough, sandy texture. Unlike many cacti, its vibrant yellow flowers emerge from the base of the plant rather than the crown.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to the Cochabamba region of Bolivia, typically found growing in rocky crevices at high altitudes. Our specimens are nursery-propagated via sustainable practices to prevent the poaching of wild populations and ensure "ex-situ" conservation.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% crushed pumice or lava grit, 30% organic matter). Avoid standard potting soil which retains too much moisture for Indian humidity.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian summer, provide 50% shade cloth protection to prevent epidermis scorching during peak afternoon hours.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is bone-dry. During the monsoon and winter (November–February), maintain strict dormancy by withholding water entirely to prevent root rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Recent phylogenetic studies have led many taxonomists to reclassify the entire Sulcorebutia genus under Weingartia. Despite this scientific shift, collectors stubbornly stick to the "Sulco" name because it specifically highlights the unique "grooved" areoles that make these plants so visually distinct from their cousins.
