Sulcorebutia Gerosenilis (Grafted)
Product Details
Silver-Maned Specialty: Sulcorebutia gerosenilis
A high-altitude treasure featuring a dense cloak of soft, silvery-white spines that shimmer in any collection.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Sulcorebutia combines the Latin sulcus (furrow), referring to the grooves above the areoles, with Rebutia, the genus it was originally split from.
The specific epithet gerosenilis is a linguistic blend of the Greek geron (old man) and the Latin senilis (senile/old age), directly referencing the plant's long, white, hair-like spines that resemble an elder’s beard. - Morphology: This cactus is characterized by its globose epidermis which is almost entirely hidden by a dense covering of pectinate (comb-like) spines. These spines are soft, flexible, and silvery-white, emerging from elongated areoles. Unlike many other cacti, the costae (ribs) are replaced by distinct tubercles arranged in spirals. In spring, it produces vibrant, funnel-shaped purple or magenta flowers that create a stark contrast against the white spination.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to the high-elevation rocky outcrops of the Cochabamba Department in Bolivia.
It grows at altitudes of 2,500 to 3,500 meters. Our plants are ethically nursery-propagated, ensuring that wild Andean populations remain undisturbed and protected from illegal poaching. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires an open, mineral-based mix (coarse sand, grit, and lava rock). Avoid peat-heavy soils which retain too much moisture for the sensitive taproot.
- Light: Needs very bright light to full sun to maintain the density and whiteness of its spines. In the Indian plains, provide light afternoon shade during peak summer to prevent overheating.
- Water/Dormancy: Water sparingly from March to October. During the Indian monsoon, keep the plant in a well-ventilated, dry area. Maintain a strict dry period from November to February to encourage spring flowering and prevent rot in the cooler months.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The classification of Sulcorebutia has long been a subject of botanical debate. Recent DNA studies have led many taxonomists to reclassify the entire genus under Weingartia. However, collectors still prefer the name Sulcorebutia because it perfectly describes the unique "groove" (sulcus) found on the tubercles—a feature that helps water channel directly toward the root system in its arid mountain home.
