Alpine Treasure: Sulcorebutia heinzii

A diminutive high-altitude gem prized for its dark, pectinated spines and vibrant magenta blooms.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Sulcorebutia combines the Latin sulcus (furrow), referring to the grooves above the areoles, with the name of French cactus expert Pierre Rebut. The specific epithet heinzii honors Heinz Swoboda, an Austrian cactus enthusiast and prolific collector who discovered and documented numerous species in the Bolivian highlands during the late 20th century.
  2. Morphology: This species is a small, clustering cactus with a dark green to brownish epidermis. It features distinct tubercles (rounded bumps) rather than continuous ribs, arranged in a spiral. Each areole bears fine, comb-like (pectinate) spines that lay flat against the plant body. It is renowned for its large, funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from the lower part of the stem, often dwarfing the plant itself.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to the Chuquisaca department of Bolivia, specifically found in rocky outcrops at high elevations (approx. 2,500–3,000 meters). Our plants are ethically produced via nursery propagation to ensure the protection of these vulnerable high-altitude populations in their natural habitat.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: Requires a strictly mineral-based mix (coarse sand, grit, and lava rock) with minimal organic matter to mimic its rocky native terrain.
    • Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight with excellent ventilation. In the Indian plains, provide light afternoon shade during peak summer to prevent heat stress, as it prefers cooler nights.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water sparingly during the growing season; the taproot is highly sensitive to overwatering. In India, keep the plant completely dry during the monsoon and winter months to prevent rot induced by high humidity or low temperatures.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Many taxonomists now classify Sulcorebutia under the genus Weingartia. Despite the naming debate, S. heinzii remains a distinct favorite among "miniature" collectors because it exhibits a survival strategy called geophytic growth, where the plant can retract slightly into the soil during extreme drought to protect itself.
