Sulcorebutia Pulchra VS 420
Product Details
Alpine Jewel: Sulcorebutia pulchra VS 420
A sought-after high-altitude rarity prized for its vibrant magenta blooms and distinctive pectinate spination.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Sulcorebutia is derived from the Latin sulcus (furrow), referring to the groove above the areole, and Rebutia, the genus it was originally associated with.
The specific epithet pulchra is Latin for "beautiful." The suffix "VS 420" is a field number identifying the specific collection by botanist Vincent Šedivý, marking this as a documented locality-specific variety. - Morphology: This plant features a flattened-globose epidermis that is typically dark green to purplish. It possesses spirally arranged tubercles (bumps) rather than continuous costae.
The most striking feature is its pectinate spines—short, comb-like bristles that lay flat against the plant body. Large, funnel-shaped flowers emerge from the lower areoles, showcasing a brilliant magenta or violet hue. - Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to the mountainous regions of Chuquisaca, Bolivia, growing at high elevations (approx. 2,500–3,000 meters). The "VS 420" designation ensures this specimen originates from cultivated stock traced back to sustainable seed collection, protecting the restricted wild populations in the Andes.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a coarse, highly mineral-based mix (80% grit/crushed brick/pumice and 20% organic compost). Excellent drainage is vital for the sensitive taproot.
- Light: Prefers very bright light with good ventilation. In the Indian plains, provide bright morning sun but protect with 50% shade cloth during the extreme afternoon heat of March to June.
- Water/Dormancy: Water sparingly during the growing season; in the Indian Monsoon, keep completely dry to avoid rot. A strict, cool, dry dormancy from November to February is essential to trigger spring flowering.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Sulcorebutia has long been a subject of botanical debate; many modern taxonomists have now merged it into Weingartia.
However, collectors maintain the Sulcorebutia name because it identifies a specific group of plants that evolved unique "furrowed" areoles as an adaptation to the harsh, high-UV environment of the South American highlands.
