The Crisp Collector’s Gem: Sulcorebutia rauschii cv. 'Green Apple'
A sought-after rarity for the minimalist collector, boasting a distinct neon-green epidermis and a sculptural, clumping form.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Sulcorebutia derives from the Latin sulcus (groove), referring to the unique furrows found behind the areoles. This specific species honors German botanist Walter Rausch, who discovered it in the 1960s.
The cultivar name 'Green Apple' is a descriptive horticultural designation chosen to distinguish this lime-green variant from the more common purple-hued rauschii forms. - Morphology: This dwarf globose cactus is prized for its smooth, apple-green epidermis and lack of traditional spines. Instead, it features tiny, pectinate (comb-like) spines pressed flat against the tubercles. It grows in a caespitose habit, meaning it naturally produces offsets to form a dense, mounded cluster.
Unlike many cacti, its costae (ribs) are replaced by distinct spiraling bumps. - Habitat & Origin: This is a specialized cultivar of the wild Sulcorebutia rauschii, which is endemic to the Chuquisaca department of Bolivia.
This specific 'Green Apple' selection was developed through selective breeding in cultivation to isolate the vibrant green pigment. Our specimens are nursery-propagated to ensure the protection of wild Bolivian populations. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% pumice, grit, or crushed brick and 30% organic matter). Avoid standard potting soil which retains too much moisture in humid Indian climates.
- Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. In India, midday summer sun (April–June) will scorch the epidermis; 40-50% shade cloth is recommended.
- Water & Dormancy: Water deeply only when the body feels slightly soft. During the monsoon, withhold water entirely if humidity is high. Maintain a dry winter dormancy (November–February) to encourage spring flowering.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: While collectors love them for their looks, Sulcorebutia are famous among botanists for their "taxonomic instability." Because they look so similar to the Rebutia and Weingartia genera, they have been reclassified multiple times. DNA sequencing recently suggested they are all part of one large, diverse family, but purists still insist on the Sulcorebutia name for its unique "grooved" areoles.
