Sulcorebutia Rauschii F. Violacidermis (Grafted)
Product Details
Deep Violet Gem: Sulcorebutia rauschii f. violacidermis
A sculptural masterpiece of the high Andes, prized for its extraordinary amethyst-hued epidermis and geometric symmetry.
- Origin & History of Name The genus name Sulcorebutia is derived from the Latin sulcus, meaning "furrow," referring to the distinctive grooves above the areoles.
The species name rauschii honors the prolific Austrian botanist Walter Rausch, who discovered the plant in the 1960s. The form name violacidermis is a literal Latin-based descriptor combining violaceus (violet) and dermis (skin), specifically identifying this variant’s unique dark-purple pigmentation. - Morphology This miniature, clustering cactus is distinguished by its globose (spherical) stems that lack traditional long spines.
Instead, it features flat, pectinate (comb-like) spines that lay flush against the epidermis. The body is divided into low, spiraling tubercles rather than continuous costae (ribs). Its most striking feature is the high concentration of anthocyanins, which grant the plant its deep violet-to-black coloration, contrasted by vivid magenta flowers that emerge from the base. - Habitat & Origin This plant is a naturally occurring variant of the species, originally native to the Chuquisaca region of Bolivia, growing at high altitudes between 2,700 and 3,500 meters. Our specimens are nursery-propagated from stable cultivars to ensure the protection of wild populations and adhere to CITES sustainability standards, preventing the depletion of endemic Andean flora.
- Cultivation Profile
- Substrate: Requires a strictly inorganic, mineral-based mix. Use a ratio of 70% coarse pumice or perlite mixed with 30% washed river sand and a minimal amount of compost.
- Light: High-intensity light is mandatory to maintain the deep violet color.
In the Indian subcontinent, provide direct morning sun but use 50% shade cloth during the peak heat of April to June to prevent scorching. - Water/Dormancy: Apply the "soak and dry" method during the growing season. In the humid Indian monsoon, withhold water entirely to prevent root rot. During the winter (Nov–Feb), keep the plant completely dry and cool to trigger spring flowering.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote While Walter Rausch is credited with its discovery, the classification of this genus has been a point of intense botanical debate. Modern DNA sequencing recently moved many Sulcorebutia species into the genus Weingartia. However, collectors and specialized nurseries stubbornly retain the name Sulcorebutia because it perfectly describes the unique "furrowed" morphology that sets these miniature treasures apart from their larger cousins.
