Product Details
Chiseled Elegance: Thelocactus conothelos f. saussieri LAU 734
A high-altitude Mexican treasure prized for its dramatic spination and vibrant, silky blooms.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Thelocactus is derived from the Greek thele (nipple) and kaktos (thistle), referring to the characteristic tubercled ribs.
The species name conothelos translates to "conical nipple," while the form saussieri honors the 19th-century Swiss explorer and naturalist Henri de Saussure. The field collector number LAU 734 identifies this specific population discovered by Alfred Lau. - Morphology: This solitary cactus features a globose-to-cylindrical epidermis divided into distinct, spiraling costae (ribs) that are heavily broken into prominent tubercles. It is distinguished by its dense, glass-like radial spines and longer central spines that create a protective "cage" around the plant. When mature, it produces large, funnel-form flowers in shades of deep magenta or purple.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species originating from the limestone hills of Matehuala, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. It thrives at elevations of approximately 1,500 meters. Our specimens are nursery-grown from documented seed lines to ensure the preservation of wild populations and promote sustainable hobbyist collection.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60-70% grit such as pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) with minimal organic matter to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires full sun to very bright indirect light. In the intense Indian summer (April-June), provide 30% green shade netting to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is completely dry. During the monsoon, ensure excellent ventilation to counter high humidity. Keep almost bone-dry during the winter dormancy period (December-January) to trigger spring flowering.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Alfred Lau, whose field number (LAU 734) defines this plant, was a missionary who discovered dozens of new cacti species while traveling through remote Mexican canyons. His collections are famous among hobbyists because they pinpointed "micro-endemic" varieties that exist only on single, specific hillsides.
