Tillandsia capitata Silver Rose
Product Details
Metallic Elegance: Tillandsia capitata 'Silver Rose'
A premier xeric bromeliad prized for its dense trichome cover and its dramatic transition to a soft rose-pink blush during anthesis.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Tillandsia was named by Carl Linnaeus in 1738 to honor the Swedish physician and botanist Elias Tillandz.
The specific epithet capitata is derived from the Latin caput (head), referring to the dense, head-like formation of the inflorescence. The cultivar name 'Silver Rose' reflects the plant's high density of silver scales and the specific pastel-pink pigmentation it develops when exposed to high light or blooming cycles. - Morphology: This cultivar is characterized by its wide, channeled leaves that form a symmetrical rosette. The epidermis is heavily coated in specialized peltate trichomes—multicellular hairs that give the plant its silver appearance and facilitate the absorption of atmospheric moisture.
Unlike most plants, it lacks a traditional root system for nutrient uptake, utilizing its roots solely as holdfasts for anchorage. During the reproductive phase, the center of the rosette undergoes a color shift, or "blushing," as anthocyanin pigments increase. - Habitat & Origin: While the base species Tillandsia capitata is widely distributed across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, 'Silver Rose' is a selected cultivar chosen for its superior size and color. It is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on trees or rocks in the wild.
Most specimens in the trade are produced via offsets (pups) in specialized nurseries, ensuring that wild populations remain undisturbed and sustainable. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Strictly non-terrestrial. It should be mounted on cork bark, driftwood, or placed in a decorative wire basket. Avoid any soil or water-retaining moss at the base to prevent crown rot.
- Light: High-intensity filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, it thrives in east-facing balconies. Protect from the scorching 12 PM – 4 PM sun in Central and Western India to prevent leaf desiccation.
- Water/Dormancy: Mist 3–4 times weekly in humid coastal regions (Mumbai/Chennai); daily misting or a 20-minute weekly soak is required in arid zones (Delhi/Rajasthan). Ensure the plant is placed upside down afterward to drain all water from the leaf axils. It does not have a true dormancy but grows slower during the cooler winter months.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Tillandsia species are part of a specialized group of plants that utilize Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM).
This allows them to keep their stomata closed during the blistering heat of the day to conserve water, only opening them at night to "breathe" in carbon dioxide. This physiological adaptation makes them one of the most water-efficient organisms on the planet.
