Tillandsia Ionantha DRUID ( Air Plant )
Product Details
Ethereal Glow: Tillandsia ionantha 'Druid'
A rare xanthic mutation that trades traditional fiery reds for a ghostly, cream-colored bloom.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus honors Swedish physician and botanist Elias Tillands. The species name ionantha is derived from the Greek ion (violet) and anthos (flower).
The cultivar name 'Druid' was coined to reflect the plant’s mystical appearance; unlike standard varieties that turn red, this specimen blushes a pale yellow or white, reminiscent of the white-robed ancient Celtic priests. - Morphology: As an epiphyte, this plant lacks traditional roots, instead using specialized silver scales called trichomes on its epidermis to absorb moisture from the air.
It features a compact, globose rosette of succulent leaves. During its "blushing" phase, the foliage transitions to a creamy yellow rather than red, producing stark white tubular flowers instead of the typical purple. - Habitat & Origin: This is a naturally occurring cultivar (a xanthic mutation) originally discovered in the wild in Mexico and Central America. Because it lacks certain pigments found in the standard species, it is selectively bred in nurseries. Our plants are ethically sourced through greenhouse propagation, supporting the conservation of wild bromeliad habitats.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires no soil; mount on driftwood, cork, or place in a decorative wire holder with maximum air circulation.
- Light: Thrives in bright, filtered sunlight.
In the Indian subcontinent, keep away from direct midday sun, especially during scorching summers, to prevent leaf desiccation. - Water/Dormancy: Mist 3–4 times weekly or perform a 20-minute soak once a week. In high-humidity coastal regions of India (like West Bengal), ensure the plant dries completely within 4 hours to prevent "crown rot."
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Tillandsia are part of the Bromeliad family—the same family as the pineapple. The 'Druid' is scientifically significant as a "color break" or leucistic-like mutation. While most ionantha use bright red pigment to attract hummingbirds for pollination, the 'Druid' represents a rare genetic shift that targets different pollinators or reflects a unique adaptation to its specific micro-climate.
