Trichocereus X Echinopsis hybrid 'YELLOW DISC'
Product Details
Solar Brilliance: Trichocereus X Echinopsis 'Yellow Disc'
A premium intergeneric hybrid prized for its oversized, high-saturation yellow blooms and exceptional floral symmetry.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Trichocereus (Greek thrix, meaning "hair") refers to the hairy floral tubes, while Echinopsis (Greek echinos, meaning "hedgehog") describes the spiny, globose form. The cultivar name 'Yellow Disc' is a literal descriptor of the plant's massive, flat-faced floral display and the circular arrangement of its dense stamen cluster, a naming convention favored by hybridizers for clarity in commercial trade.
- Morphology: This hybrid features a robust, cylindrical epidermis with well-defined vertical costae (ribs) that allow for stem expansion during water uptake. Its most striking feature is the large macranthous bloom; the broad, silky petals open widely to reveal a prominent central disc of stamens. The areoles are strategically spaced along the ribs, bearing short, defensive spines typical of its Echinopsis lineage.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Yellow Disc' is a man-made cultivar, the result of selective intergeneric breeding between Trichocereus (known for height and vigor) and Echinopsis (known for floral diversity). It does not exist in the wild. Our specimens are produced via sustainable vegetative propagation (pups or cuttings), ensuring no depletion of wild South American populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% coarse grit, pumice, or crushed brick and 40% organic matter) to prevent root rot in humid Indian climates.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 40-50% shade cloth during peak summer (April–June) to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" cycle during the monsoon and summer. Maintain strict winter dormancy from November to February by withholding water entirely to trigger spring budding.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The "Trichocereus vs. Echinopsis" debate has been a point of botanical contention for decades. In the 1970s and 80s, taxonomists merged the genera based on seed morphology, but recent DNA sequencing has led many experts to re-segregate them. This hybrid represents the perfect genetic bridge, combining the "night-blooming cereus" stamina with the vibrant "hedgehog cactus" color palette.
