Trichocerous hybrid SUPER APRICOT 2
Product Details
The Floral Giant: Trichocereus Hybrid 'Super Apricot'
A masterpiece of horticultural breeding, this cultivar offers collectors massive, ruffled blooms in vivid gradients of orange and yellow, marrying robust growth with unparalleled floral aesthetics.
- Origin & History of Name The genus name Trichocereus derives from the Greek thrix (hair) and the Latin cereus (candle), referring to the hairy floral tubes of the original species.
The cultivar epithet 'Super Apricot' was coined by renowned hybridizer Bob Schick to describe the flower’s intense, saturated hue, which resembles the ripening skin of an apricot. This specific clone was selected for its exceptional pigment stability and flower size, becoming a standout among Schick’s releases distributed through the Huntington Botanical Gardens. - Morphology This hybrid features a sturdy, columnar stem organized into distinct vertical ribs (costae) lined with tomentose areoles bearing short, radial spines. The epidermis is a rich, semi-glossy green, robust enough to support the plant's defining feature: its immense inflorescence. The blooms are funnel-shaped and multi-seriate, with inner tepals displaying a luminous apricot-orange that fades to a golden throat, while the outer tepals often show darker bronze or reddish midstripes.
- Habitat & Origin This plant is a cultivar, not a wild species. It is a product of selective breeding (hybridization) aimed at combining the resilience of the Trichocereus (now often classified under Echinopsis) genus with superior floral characteristics. As a nursery-propagated clone, it is an environmentally sustainable choice that does not impact wild populations in the Andes.
- Cultivation Profile
- Substrate: Requires a highly porous, mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite to 30% organic compost) to prevent root rot, particularly during the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. In the harsh Indian summer, provide filtered shade during peak afternoon hours to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly when the substrate is completely dry during the active growing season (March–October). induce winter dormancy by withholding water from November to February to encourage prolific flowering in spring.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote 'Super Apricot' is part of the prestigious "Schick Hybrids" lineage, a project by Bob Schick in collaboration with the Huntington Botanical Gardens in California. Schick spent decades crossing Paramount hybrids (created by Harry Johnson) with Trichocereus and Echinopsis species.
His goal was not just color, but structural integrity; unlike many cacti that flower for a single night, Schick selected for blooms that could withstand heat and remain open longer, allowing for extended enjoyment of their complex pigmentation.
