Turbinicarpus valdezianus CREST
Product Details
Sculptural Elegance: Turbinicarpus valdezianus f. cristata
A rare, fan-shaped living sculpture that combines delicate feathery spines with a highly sought-after crested growth habit.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Turbinicarpus is derived from the Latin turbo (spinning top) and Greek karpos (fruit), referring to the fruit's shape.
The specific epithet valdezianus honors Mexican botanist Monterrey Valdez, who was instrumental in early 20th-century cactus research. This specific form is labeled "CREST" (or cristata) to denote a rare genetic mutation where the growing point elongates into a ridge rather than a single apex. - Morphology: This specimen exhibits a fasciated growth pattern, where the epidermis folds into undulating, fan-like ripples. It is famously characterized by its plumose spines—tiny, white, feathery structures that densely cover the plant, providing a "snowy" appearance.
Unlike the standard globular form, the crest creates a wide, flattened ribbon that maintains the species' miniature stature while maximizing surface area. - Habitat & Origin: While the base species is native to the limestone hills of Coahuila and San Luis Potosí, Mexico, the Crested form is a specialized cultivar selected in cultivation for its stable mutation. To ensure sustainability and protect wild populations (which are CITES-listed), our specimens are exclusively nursery-propagated via grafting or seed-grown selections.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (80% pumice, lava grit, or coarse sand and 20% organic matter). Avoid standard potting soil which retains too much humidity for Indian monsoon conditions.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 40-50% shade cloth during peak summer (April–June) to prevent scorching the delicate crest.
- Water/Dormancy: Water sparingly from March to October when the mix is bone dry. Maintain strict winter dormancy (November–February) by withholding water entirely to prevent root rot in humid Indian winters.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Turbinicarpus valdezianus is considered one of the "miniature marvels" of the cactus world. Interestingly, despite its tiny size, the flowers can be nearly as large as the plant body itself. Historically, this species was once classified under the genus Pelecyphora due to its unique spine structure, which mimics the appearance of certain arthropods to help dissipate heat and collect dew in arid environments.
