Pinnacle of Madagascar: Uncarina leptocarpa

A rare white-flowering caudiciform, this species is highly coveted for its elegant bicolour trumpets and prehistoric silhouette.

1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Uncarina is derived from the Greek onkos (hook) or unkaria, referring to the uncinate (hooked) appendages found on the seed capsules. The specific epithet leptocarpa combines leptos (slender) and karpos (fruit), describing the characteristic thin, hooked seed pods that distinguish it from its cousins. The genus was established by Otto Stapf in 1895.
2. Morphology: This pachycaul shrub features a thickened, water-storing trunk with a pale, peeling epidermis. Its leaves are large, pubescent (velvety), and heart-shaped. The inflorescence is unique among the predominantly yellow-flowered genus; it produces a slender, lime-green floral tube supporting fused, creamy-white petals that transition into a deep yellow throat, facilitating specific pollinator entry.
3. Habitat & Origin: Uncarina leptocarpa is a wild species endemic to the deciduous dry forests of Western Madagascar, specifically the Boeny region. It grows in limestone-rich soils. Our specimens are nursery-grown from sustainable seed stock, ensuring that wild populations in their restricted native range remain undisturbed.
4. Cultivation Profile:
   • Substrate: Requires a porous, mineral-rich medium. A mix of 60% grit (coarse sand/lava rock) and 40% organic compost ensures the drainage necessary for the Indian monsoon.
   • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or dappled sun. In the Indian subcontinent, protection from harsh, direct midday summer sun is recommended to prevent leaf scorch.
   • Water/Dormancy: Provide consistent moisture during the hot growing season. The plant is deciduous; as temperatures drop in November, it will shed foliage. During this dormancy, restrict water to once a month to prevent root rot in cool, damp conditions.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The "hooked" fruits of Uncarina are a remarkable example of epizoochory. The seed pods are covered in stiff, barbed hooks designed to catch onto the fur—or feet—of passing animals (and historically, now-extinct giant lemurs). This ensures the seeds are transported over long distances before the pod eventually breaks down to release the seeds.
