Product Details
Velvet Phantom of the Sierra: Wilcoxia Schmollii (Echinocereus schmollii)
A subterranean treasure for the serious collector, prized for its delicate woolly stems and elusive purple blooms.
- Origin & History of Name: The species name schmollii honors German-Mexican botanist Ferdinand Schmoll, a prominent cactus explorer of the mid-20th century. While historically classified under the genus Wilcoxia (named after U.S. Brigadier General Timothy Wilcox), it is now botanically recognized as a member of Echinocereus.
The common name "Lamb's Tail Cactus" refers to its soft, pubescent appearance. - Morphology: This plant is characterized by a geophytic growth habit, featuring a massive, tuberous root system that stores water underground.
Above the soil, it produces slender, cylindrical stems (epidermis) covered in dense, hair-like white spines that give it a "fuzzy" texture. Unlike most Echinocereus, its ribs (costae) are nearly obscured by the woolly areoles. It produces large, funnel-shaped flowers in vibrant shades of pink to magenta. - Habitat & Origin: Echinocereus schmollii is a wild species endemic to a very restricted range in the state of Querétaro, Mexico.
Due to habitat loss and over-collection, it is listed as Endangered. Our specimens are exclusively nursery-propagated via seed or grafting to ensure the protection of wild populations and ecological sustainability. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a highly porous, mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice, 30% organic matter) to accommodate the sensitive tuberous root.
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from the harsh afternoon sun during peak summer (April–June) to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water sparingly during the growing season once the substrate is completely dry. Maintain strict dryness during the monsoon and winter dormancy to prevent tuber rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: This species is often referred to as a "mimicry plant" in its natural habitat. Because its thin, brownish-grey stems look like dead twigs or dried grass, it is nearly impossible to find in the wild unless it is in bloom, a survival strategy designed to hide its water-rich tuber from thirsty desert animals.
